BAMENDA FILM ASSOCIATION
- JOLIBA eV GOES AFRICA -

Yaoundé (6).JPG

The BFA (Bamenda Film Association), a self-organized film school in Cameroon founded in 2013, encourages young media makers (in Bamenda and Yaoundé) to strengthen existing skills and acquire new ones in self-developed productions. With contributions in documentary, fiction and experimental genres, they not only create an extensive program that makes their perspectives on diversity and global relationships visible, but they also empower themselves in the process.

From December 2022 to February 2023, the BFA team, in cooperation with JOLIBA eV and with the support of Nijinski Arts Internacional eV, taught 16 participants (11 women and 5 men) professional skills in camera, lighting and sound technology as well as interview techniques and storytelling.

The result is high-quality photographs and a professionally made documentary film entitled "Scar". The film has already been shown twice in Cameroon and there are plans to show it in Berlin this year. Until then, it can be viewed here:

The behind the scenes of the "Women's Media Training Program" can be found at the following link:

Another result is the talk show entitled "STEP UP", which is linked here:

Our thanks go to the Berlin-based North-South Bridges Foundation and the BMZ (Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development), whose funding made the realization of the project possible.

"On The Edge Of The Body", a pantomime workshop using the method of Marcel Marceau was offered to bring people of different nationalities and cultures together.

The workshop ran from January 15, 2023 to June 30, 2023.

In three consecutive phases, the participants were taught different aspects of pantomime:

In the first phase, which lasted two months, the focus was on exercises to increase physical fitness and flexibility. Breathing and voice exercises as well as rhythm exercises were also carried out.

The second phase also lasted two months and focused on the basic principles of pantomime. Participants learned mask exercises, working with blocks and weights, and practicing small improvised scenes.

The final phase also lasted two months. Here, participants had the opportunity to implement what they had learned in spontaneous scenes inspired by their own stories. This phase culminated in a final evening where participants presented the scenes they had created.

The workshop was led by trainers Rafat Alzakout and Lama AlHalabi.

Let's be honest

The project "Let's Be Honest" aimed to introduce children, adolescents and young adults to anti-colonial perspectives on racism.

As part of this project, we organized community talks to discuss gaps in knowledge. We also held media workshops aimed at young people aged 14 and over on the topic of coming to terms with colonialism. We also developed awareness-raising film projects aimed specifically at children aged 6 and over.

For further information on the project, past events and the project summary method manual, please visit the project website.

Participation makes us strong

Our project "Participation makes you strong", funded by the DSEE, was specifically designed for BiPoC from Ukraine who sought refuge in so-called third countries.

Between September and December 2022, we offered free professional career coaching and media literacy courses. Our main goal was to support young people and adults, especially women, in their integration into our society. Through these coaching sessions and internships in our network, they were able to qualify for re-entry into working life.

In the media literacy courses, participants acquired skills in using computers, cameras, software and design methods.

We created a protected space for the exchange of experiences, the processing of experiences and mutual support.

The results of our talk shows and interviews were presented in the form of TV and online contributions in December 2022.

“We Got That Power, We Got That Magic”

aimed to create space for the realities of life of young people between the ages of 13 and 27, who are often told in their everyday lives that they are not "normal". But what does it actually mean to be normal? Who in our society is "We" and who means "the others"? How can we fill this "other" with positive connotations, redefine it and thus remove boundaries between "we" and the "other"? In the project we learned that all of this should not only take place theoretically in our heads. Together we developed a new artistic language for our experiences and thoughts. At the end of the project, a performance was presented, which was organized together with the support of performer, activist and anti-discrimination officer Isabel Kwarteng-Acheampong and the association JOLIBA eV was developed.

During the project period 2021-2022, six film workshops, each lasting 5 workshop days, took place. Two media workshops and one workshop for the preparation and implementation of a presentation event will be held per project year.

The courses built on one another. The production of music and film allowed reflection on the everyday culture of young people (11-18) from the perspective of different cultures of origin. The project particularly enables the discussion of the location in Germany from a colonial history perspective.

The project enabled various modules for exchange on promoting integration through media and art.

Various film production workshops and art workshops (felting and stonemasonry) enabled the encounter with people who, among other things, follow anti-racist campaigns, global learning and intercultural exchange and who share common themes due to their own background. The workshops thus provided a reflection on one's own roots, personal life path, social roles, one's own expectations and the expectations of reference groups and society. The concrete offers for participation consisted of:

Participation through media
Since the project began in 2019, the project has developed into a self-determined, anti-racist, post-colonial online TV team called Global We Media, which continues to grow beyond the PAMUK project. Community TV encourages young media makers to develop their skills in self-organized productions. Current productions and participation offers can be found here: Global We Media

Participation through art

Offers for craft and artistic workshops on the processing of textiles, felt wool, stone and wood. Through the production of art objects, the participants learn to express themselves or can simultaneously make historical and socio-political statements.

Holiday leisure

Autumn Leaves

As part of the project, a group of children and young people were given the opportunity to go on a joint trip to the Uckermark during the 2021 autumn holidays. There, they explored the area together, created upcycled textile art, or got to know their own voice in joint voice training exercises for more body awareness. The entire project aimed to bring the joy of "being there" closer to the participants. The focus was on raising awareness of the sense of community that arises from the interaction of one's own actions, coordinated with the contributions of others. An experienced team of artists and educators led the group through the varied program. Most evenings ended together around the campfire.

Media workshop_ 1.jpg

With the “Film Workshop in JOLIBA 2020”, Joliba eV and Nijinski Arts Internacional eV are continuing a project approach that strengthens children and young people culturally through creativity and film. In the project, the methodological instruction consisted of practical hands-on methods and constructive encouragement. The aim of the film workshop was to realize one's own stories on film. In a documentary about the population of the district, the intercultural experiences of people were examined in the form of interviews. In two short films they made references to traditions of various cultures, in another short film they addressed the clash of cultures. Another short film was about the current threat posed by Corona.

Shooting films at JOLIBA 2020

In this project, the participants were given inspiration through creative writing exercises and storytelling methods to come up with their own film ideas. Identity work takes place in the process of turning their ideas into films. The children and young people have acquired cultural skills and trained their teamwork skills. Under the guidance of experienced filmmakers and media designers, they realized their concepts and learned to express themselves cinematically. Together as a team, they tried out the portrayal of their characters; together they developed scenes based on their own ideas and fantasies.
